Basics about a simple wind power generator

Windmill energy has been used to generate power for centuries and is still a great source of free power today. Early models used sails made out of mats or reeds to catch a passing breeze and turn a central shaft. This shaft would turn a grinding mill that was used to process grain using this windmill energy. Later versions of these windmills matured into cloth sails and eventually large wooden blades that provided the rotation for this wind mill power. In addition to grain processing this wind mill power was adapted for other chores such as pumping water and spinning the saw blades in large mills.

How do windmills generate electricity?

Using windmills to generate electricity is a fairly modern development and has seen a lot of innovation in recent years as the technology improved. These modern wind turbines are smaller, quieter and more efficient than older models and do a great job of turning a passing breeze into electricity that can be used for your home. Even though these newer wind turbines have been greatly improved since their early introduction, they still operate in fundamentally the same way as earlier models.

In its simplest form a wind power generator is basically a set of blades that are crafted to catch the wind and attached to a rotor plate that can orient itself into the wind. This rotor assembly is attached to a generator that when spun by the rotating blades produces electricity. In most of these modern wind turbines the generator will produce a DC current that needs to be converted to AC current for use in the home by a device called an inverter.

Even though the basic components of this wind power generator are the same, they have seen dramatic improvements over the years. The blades currently being used on most of these wind turbines are now made out of a lightweight composite material. This gives them tremendous strength as well as making them very light for their size. These lighter blades allow the turbines to spin with a smaller wind than older models. This is important since it means they will be spinning more frequently in a given day, and generate more electricity as a result.

The generators have also been improved and modern versions can produce more current than older models with a similar rotation speed. By doing this, the generator will be able to supply more power to the home than older models with the same amount of wind. Both of these improvements ensure a much higher efficiency and will help homeowners offset more of their monthly utility needs as a result.

In addition to improvements in materials, there are also radical new designs being released that offer other advantages to a homeowner in addition to efficiency. Some of these designs offer a smaller and lighter wind turbine for the home. These smaller turbines don't require a tower to operate and can actually produce quite a lot of power from lower velocity winds near the ground. Some of them are even able to mount directly on the roof of the home, saving the homeowner even more money on installation costs.

Another area of innovation is focused on the vertical axis wind turbines. These use a set of vertical blades to catch the wind and offer the advantage of being able to spin in a wind arriving from any direction. Even though this style of wind turbine will not produce the same mount of power as a standard horizontal model, it spins more regularly and can make up the difference in power over the course of the day. Whichever model you choose you can rest easy in the knowledge that these modern wind turbines will generate a substantial amount of power for your home from the wind as long as there is a breeze blowing.
